Become a Mentor

Mentoring is a structured, trusting relationship between caring adults - even older teens - and school-age youth. Mentors provide personal guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the youth. The benefits are mutual:

  • mentors open a new chapter in their life that brings opportunities to share in the growth of a child;
  • youth mentored gain a dependable, more experienced friend with whom to enjoy activities, and a caring person sharing interests and everyday conversation, that may be missing in their lives.

The Greater Houston Mentoring Collaborative does not directly recruit, screen or match mentors with youth. Each program that matches mentors with youth maintains its own mentor screening, background checks, training and supervision.

For persons interested in becoming a mentor, we provide standardized, detailed descriptions of mentoring programs of Collaborative member agencies, with contact information. Please contact them directly for their mentor criteria, policies and procedures.
